Night #2

Night #2 went better than night #1. RDH struggled with going down from 9pm-10pm. Then he woke back up at 11pm. I rocked him and laid him down - immediately he was up, but he allowed me to lay him back down (unlike the night before when all he would do was fight me and I would have to leave with him screaming). I sat patting his back for about 15 minutes, then he closed his eyes and went to sleep. We did this at 11pm, 2am, 4am, and 6am. Those are a lot of wakings, but the fact that he wasnt screaming continuely through all of them like the night before- I see this as a HUGE improvement. Hopefully we can continue to go forward and improve! AND, I only nursed him at the 4am and 6am times.....so I cut out two feedings (11pm and 2am) in 2 days :-)

Sleep Training

Now that August is doing so well in his big boy bed, I have decided to move RDH to the crib in the nursery and sleep train him. So far, night 1 is down and it SUCKED!
I hated to start on his birthday, but when it was apparent that he was not going to lay down and go to sleep next to me and it was already 915pm, I decided we were starting. Here is how it went:
915pm - rock for 15 minutes, laid down RDH
cry for 2 minutes
back in at 917 - rock, lay down RDH
cry for 5 minutes
I stretched out the intervals, and finally by 10:30 he was down asleep in his crib
UP screaming at 1:41am. Again we did intervals - getting all the way up to a 20 minute interval before I went in the room. He SCREAMED the entire time until 4am, when I gave up, nursed him and put him in bed with me. Everytime I laid him down he was asleep and would immediately wake up. Poor Richard Dean has to learn to sleep through the night. With August, we had to let him cry it out as well, but it only took about 4 nights and he was only waking up once a night and his longest stretch was only 1 hour. Sigh..... I HATE sleep training, but I dont know what else or how else to do it. I read a book called The No Cry Sleep Solution. It was about how to change a co-sleeping/breastfeeding baby. I thought it was perfect for us, but the methods in there totally did NOT work, so I am trying this. If there are other suggestions out there, I would love to hear them. I hate seeing/hearing him so upset.

"August says...."

Today I was driving August to Gina's house and I started yawning. August then exclaimed "Mommy tired?" and I said "Yes, Mommy is tired" He looked for a second and then responded. "Ok Mommy, want to sleep in big boy bed with Curious George?" I asked him if it was comfortable in that Big Boy bed and he smiled and said "yes"

toooo cute!

tonight we are getting ready for the big day tomorrow. A very special little boy turns ONE! OH MY!!!

The BIG BOY BED move!

Done and Done! I am SO SO SO proud of August! This went so super smooth, it is very obvious to me that when we tried to do this 10 months ago that it was just way too soon for August.
We talked and talked about the move to August before it was to happen and Ms Gina made sure to incorporate books about Big Boy Beds during storytime.

Friday night we decided to take the move on. We bathed August and let him watch his two episodes of Curious George upstairs. After the episodes were over, we took him to his big boy room and in his bed was a new 21 inch Curious George (thank you SO much for this idea Aunt Sandra - it was golden!!). August got SO excited and immediately grabbed Curious George. We asked him if he wanted to sleep with Curious George and he let out a very excited "Yes" and started heading for the door. We stopped him and explained to him that Curious George sleeps upstairs in the big boy bed. August looked sad and said he wanted to sleep downstairs. Then we asked him if he would like to sleep upstairs with Curious George and he said ok. He climbed in bed, we gave him kisses, we left and we didnt hear a peep from him until 7:40am ! He woke up, said Mommy, Daddy.....Richard and I ran up there and he was pointing at the window saying - its light, August wake up!

Saturday night: August didnt get his nap because of a birthday party and he ran himself to the ground jumping on the trampoline at the birthday party, so he fell asleep while eating dinner. This was at 630pm. I was so nervous about how the night would go since we didnt do our routine! But August was GREAT! We moved him up to his bed at 730pm, and he laid in there wide awake (i was watching him on the camera) for about an hour holding Curious George, then turned over and went to sleep. At 430am, he fell off the bed :-( We have those sleeping rails up, but they dont go the entire length of the bed and August moves a lot when he sleeps. By the time I got upstairs, he had put himself back in the bed and had stopped crying. He was still a little shaken though. I asked him if he wanted mommy to lay down with him and he just grabbed Curious George and said "No Mommy, go away." So I did - I left and went downstairs to watch him. I didnt sleep again that night for fear he was going to fall out of bed again. At one point, I saw him getting close and ran upstairs and moved him. He didnt ask to get out of bed until 830am on Sunday!
Sunday I went and bought longer bed rails. August ASKED to go lay down with Curious George at 845pm and I had to go wake him up at 815am !
He is just doing so awesome!
Today when I was changing RDH in the Nursery, August told me that he sleeps upstairs in his Big Boy Bed and then he pointed to the crib and said that baby brother sleeps in there. warmed my heart!
thanks for all the prayers on this transition. I am so happy that August isnt scared and likes his new room! It's a big change for such a little boy! I was especially impressed that even though he fell out of the bed on Saturday, he was fine with going back in there and sleeping alone!
The mini crib in our room has been taken down YAY!!!!! now we are working on getting RDH to sleep a full night in his new room!

Carnival and Birthday Party!

August riding the train at the Baldwin Fall Carnival. He HAD to have the "yellow" barrel.....we were very lucky that we raced over there and got the yellow one before anyone else had a chance to!
This gives a new definition to running up hill.
Gage's 2 year bday party. August WORE himself out. he - of course- LOVED the trampoline!

RDH enjoyed all the attention he got at the party

August was SO tired after Gage's party and he didnt get a nap that day because of the timing of the party, so he fell asleep eating dinner. We moved him to the couch since it was only 630pm, but when he was still sleeping at 7:30 pm despite his brother yelling at him and pulling his hair, we moved him to his big boy bed upstairs :-) yes - you read right!!!! August is in his big boy bed and we are so proud of him! ...more on that later - it deserves its own post!

LOTS of pictures....Mommy's Bday and Sweetberry Farms

August at Sweetberry Farms getting his pumpkin!

We tried to get the kids to smile and look at the camera.....didnt happen!

The wheelbarrow was for pumpkins....August felt it was also for him to ride in!

Again...head turned

August is a MESS! This is at the end of the trip. This child does not know how to operate at anything less that 300%! Look at him! His lip is stuck out because he is whining and doesnt want to leave, his shorts are wet because he found a well water faucet to play in, his leg is muddy from throwing himself on the pumpkins and rolling around. His snake is smeared all over his face/nose. He just makes me laugh....he had so much fun!

Picking flowers with grandma. They had these huge fields of flowers that you could pick....they were as tall as August! Beautiful!

August gave RDH a flower. He ate it. Nice

RDH trying to eat more flowers, August beating the ground with a stick.

Showing his friend Hudson all the pretty flowers.

Hayride through Scarecrow Island

The "cowboy" who drove the tractor that pulled the train. August was infatuated with this guy.

On the train ride! When August woke up that morning I told him we were going to go ride a train, so he insisted on wearing his Thomas the Train shirt for the occasion!

August was so proud of his snake art!

RDH the pumpkin!

August and Madison with the goats. These goats looked so much better than the ones you get at the mobile petting zoos!

SO CUTE!

August the Farmer!

Ready for OU weekend.

telling baby brother he has a "moo" on his shirt and that they match! He gets really excited when he finds "matches" these days

August eating my birthday cake. August kept singing Happy Birthday to August! He stole my birthday, which was totally fine with me because he was so darn cute singing!

YUMMY!

Blowing out candles. Yes - that is icing on August's face!

Singing Happy Birthday to August

Licking the icing off! Daddy made Mommy a very yummy cake!
